Flash can refer to Flash memory or Adobe Flash

Flash memory is a chip-based storage technology used in PCs and other devices such as phones. Examples include SD Cards and USB sticks.

Adobe Flash is a multimedia platform used to handle video and other interactive content on web sites.

One advantage of Adobe Flash is that it is cross-platform, with a browser plug-in available for a wide range of devices and operating systems. The Flash plug-in is also a free download for end users.

However, Apple has famously refused to sanction the application on its mobile devices, arguing it is unstable, causes crashes and is too resource hungry. This has led to a standoff between the two firms as they seek to try and rectify the situation.

Furthermore, the development of the HTML5 web standard could well see the use of Flash greatly reduced for hosting video content online.
