VoIP stands for Voice over IP, and refers to the delivery of voice data over the internet, also known as IP telephony.

VoIP services can be delivered using IP telephones and a digital telephone exchange or PBX, or by using a computer with VoIP-capable software.

The most popular example of this is Skype which is able to make text, voice and video calls between users all over the world without any of the costs associated with long-distance voice calls using the standard telephone network.

In corporate environments, Microsoft's Lync (formerly Office Communicator) allows users to make IP voice or video calls, and supports instant messaging and videoconferencing.

VoIP services are also appearing on mobile phones , most notably on the iPhone4's FaceTime application, which runs over Wi-Fi.
