MPEG-4 is a standard for encoding audio and video developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).
Strictly speaking, MPEG-4 is actually a collection of standards for compression and delivery of video or audio streams.
It absorbs many of the features of the earlier MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 standards, but offers improved quality.
A major feature of MPEG-4 is its ability to identify and deal with separate audio and video elements in a data stream, which allows these to be separately compressed for greater overall efficiency.
MPEG-4 is widely supported by multimedia players, including Apple's iPod devices and Windows Media Player.
