A dual-core processor is one that fits two complete CPUs onto a single silicon chip, effectively packing much more performance into a package with the same external dimensions.
Dual-core processors are generally found in desktop computers and laptops, with chips such as the AMD Phenom II X2 and Intel Core i3.
However, chips with more than two cores are also now filtering through to desktops and laptops, while dual-core processors are starting to appear in mobile devices such as smartphones.
The LG Optimus 2X was unveiled as the world's first dual-core smartphone and the Korean manufacturer will also be shipping its LG Optimus Pad and LG Optimus 3D smartphone with dual-core processors this year.
