Amoled refers to a flat-screen display technology, primarily used in smartphones and other portable devices.
The term is an acronym of active matrix Oled, where Oled is a further acronym for organic light-emitting diode.
Active matrix refers to the fact that every single pixel in the display is driven directly by a transistor, which produces a sharper, clearer image.
Oled refers to the use of organic compounds in the display, which produce a brighter image than older technologies such as LCD.
The technology also uses less power than traditional displays making it well suited for use within portable devices.
Amoled displays can be difficult to view in direct sunlight compared to LCDs. This problem has been addressed by Super Amoled technology, which reduces the size of gaps between layers of the screen.
Notable devices that feature Super Amoled technology include the high-end Samsung Galaxy S, Google Nexus S and the original HTC Desire.
