Microsoft Windows is a series of operating systems for both server and desktop PCs, and widely used in businesses as the standard platform for running software applications.
Windows was first launched in 1985, but did not rise to mainstream dominance until after the launch of Windows 95 in 1995.
The platform is the most installed operating system in the world, present on at least 90 percent of desktop or laptop systems.
Microsoft's most current version for end-users is Windows 7, released in 2009, which focused on reliability as well as bringing user interface improvements and new features such as HomeGroup for home networks.
The latest version for servers is Windows Server 2008 R2, whch is based on the same core code as Windows 7. Both have now been updated with a service pack release.
The widespread use of Windows has made it a huge target for hackers and cyber criminals who have frequently exploited design flaws in the software to take control of systems or run malicious software.
