H.264 is a coding standard for video compression, currently used for high definition video such as in Blu-ray movie disks.
It is also used to deliver streaming video by numerous websites including YouTube and iTunes.
H.264 is one of the standards being considered for the video element in HTML5, which will provide direct audio and video support in a browser instead of relying on plug-ins.
However, some have objected to H.264 being used here, as it is covered by patents.
In January 2011, Google announced it was withdrawing support for H.264 from its Chrome browser and would instead support the open-source WebM (VP8) and Ogg Theora codecs.
