The Digital Divide refers to a perceived inequality between those with easy access to the internet and those without it, either because of cost or because broadband delivery has not yet extended to some rural areas.

Many experts, including the UK government, are concerned that if the situation continues or even worsens, it will exacerbate existing social inequalities.

They also fear it could affect the economy by leaving many businesses unable to take advantage of opportunites presented by the internet, at a time when more and more business is moving online.

The current government has promised to provide minimum internet access of 2Mbit/s for the entire population of the UK  by 2015.
