The launch of Security Essentials sees Microsoft attempting to give Windows users an all-encompassing anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware application, for free.
The interface is clear and intuitive, with simple options to scan for viruses or back up and restore files. The health bar lets you know your security status and will guide you through the necessary steps when problems arise.
Microsoft claims that 70 per cent of consumers do not have anti-virus software or do not keep it updated, so Essentials is specifically aimed at inexperienced users who may not have the technical know-how or time to manage a computer on a daily basis.
This version Microsoft Security Essentials will only work in genuine versions of Windows.
The latest Microsoft Security Essentials ships with a license that enables you to use it for free in your small business (up to ten licenses). Ideal for a home office, department or small team.

MSE
I love MSE, don't know why it took MS so long to have a product that should have been there in the first place. The program interfaces well, runs in the background, no nonsense, no unnecessary bloatware. I understand MSE turnas off windows defender as its features are contained in MSE...

Nice adv Brian J. Fitzpatrick
@Brian J. Fitzpatrick. I can just... laugh. Lots of details about Trend Micro. But no details about the super hidden trojan. I have Security Essentials installed on about 15 computers and they are completely fine. Also I am wandering how did you managed to configure MSSE to scan "every other day" when the available options are daily, Monday, Tuesday, ..., Sunday, being able to select only one option. MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS IS A GOOD ANTIVIRUS! If you need something more, like firewall etc, then you should go for a paid solution.

Microsoft Sec. Essentials + Avg free + spybot free + Ad.Aware
I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials + Avg free + spybot free + Ad Aware free for about a month on two laptops and a desktop. Should running all these together be a problem? Microsoft Sec. Essentials found a 'TrojanDownloader:Win/Gida.A - alert level severe and removed it. Not discovered by the other progams mentioned

Well, I thought this was a good Security Program....ha..
I unistalled Avast Antivirus and switched to the newest version of Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender on my freshly formatted Windows 7 Ultimate computer 3 weeks ago. I set both of these programs to update automatically daily and to scan my hard drive every other day. Everything was running fine until one day I ran into a problem with my mouse freezing up a few seconds after bootup. After about 3 reboots I could get past the problem and then I ran a Virus check..nothing, a spyware check...nothing, I rolled things back a week before with system restore, still had problem... I thought it might be a hardware problem so I switched up my mouse, still had a problem. It got so bad finally I could hardly get on line, (10 reboots and then only safe mode would work, I tried resetting the BIOS, swapping RAM, doing a system wide software update, nothing worked.) Well I was about ready to reformat my Hard Drive, but instead I downloaded Trend Micro's Housecall (online Virus Scanner) to a USB drive with my other computer and used the USB drive to boot from and it found a Trojan Horse after about a 2 hour scan on my WD 500GB Cavair Black HDD. I clicked "Fix"...it did...and now I'm running fine again. I then went and unistalled Microcraps Security Essentialess and Windows Defenderless from my Computer and went straight to Trend Micro's website (the makers of Housecall) and installed their 30 day trial of their full blown Security Suite, because I figured if their online scanner can find stuff that Microcrap's programs can't, I figured their real Security Suite would be even better. and it is. The program is easy to use it covers all the bases for security and is lightweight on my system. Yesterday I went and paid the $35 up-grade fee for a year subscription. Well worth the assurance of security in my mind just knowing I am now better protected, and even thou I do Back Up my internal drive to an external one once every other week I still would have been pissed if I would have had to reformat this drive and lose its contents and had to reinstall all the software and drivers. ( it takes a straight 16 hours of work, I know I've done it before, a real pain in the arse) Nice try Billyboy but you still haven't got any good security Programs for your own operating system. Being free is nice and all and MSE is Windows 7 compatible, but....I'd rather be free from Virus' and Trojan's and pay Trend Micro a few bucks.

essentials
hello i was going to try this, but seeing i bought NIS2010 for just under half price, which is about half price of a renewal, for my NIS 2007,am giving that a try, only thing is Im finding the ad-blocker missing that was a add-on for NIS 2007,perhaps if anyones reading this could let me know where I can download free ad-blocker,NIS 2010 seems a lot better than what norton has been producing lately, and was easier to install and a lot more privacy settings

Excellent works well!
*Note for a previous comment" Your absolutely wrong, if you don't like this product it is very easy to uninstall! About this excellent software, the answer is simple, for day-day banking, surfing this works A-OK! I have this installed on 3 of my machines, to be periodically sure I use on-line scanners to make sure nothing get's through, nothing has! It get's a thumbs up from CNET editors as well. It's FREE, this is not 2005, McAfee and Norton are through!

Onecare
The previous comment to mine is talking about the old onecare but it has been replaced by a new, better, uninstallable and free version. This is a brilliant tool and i recommend it to everyone. It is also very light on system resources as i have a 256mb ram pc that now runs like 2gb ram.
