Capable free office suite that adds further competition to OpenOffice

Not only are there a range of competitive commercial office suites, such as Sun Star Office, Ashampoo Office and Ability Office, there are free equivalents, such as Open Office and the most recent release from IBM, Lotus Symphony.
Lotus Symphony ships with three modules: Documents, Presentations and Spreadsheets, which means you’ll be able to write documents, produce presentations and calculate your basic finances. Although Symphony supports and pro-actively encourages you to use the new Open Document Format (ODF), all modules enable you to read and write to Microsoft Office documents.
Note that there is no direct download link for Lotus Symphony 3. Registration is required before download.

I'm still using the above IBM product. It's a bit behind the times (!) but is very stable and does almost everything a word processor should do. There are no extravagant bells and whistles. Unfortunately I need Word to open Docs and edit e-mails but you can't have everything.

Symphony & Notes
Notes 8 ships with a brand new and rather attractive interface and renders HTML fine - it also comes bundled with Symphony so you can integrate everything into one environment. Also classifying Notes as simply an email client is a woeful understatement of it's capabilities - it's an application platform albeit one that has email as a primary function. vnunet.com comment: correct, but it's still woeful. Good to hear Lotus 8 has been radically updated. Lotus 7 can't even render basic HTML correspondence, correctly.

What about Lotus Mail
All well and good IBM trying to emulate Microsoft Office but without introducing some competition to Microsoft's mail manager "Outlook Express", the exercise is pointless. In my opinion, Lotus Notes is far superior but it's not as user friendly and not available to the masses. vnunet.com comment: Lotus Notes is dreadful. Outlook Express is a home-user product. It's Outlook which is the business email client from Microsoft. Lotus Notes can't even display HTML content correctly and ships with an old user-interface.

Needed extra speed..
Been an OpenOffice user and liked it much but was too bland in appearance. I took this beta for a spin and was frustrated that Symphony was sooo slow. Then I remembered I tweaked OO with this: File/Preferences/Productivity Tool/Memory/total cache size/128MB/Apply I did the same to Symphony and response time has vastly improved in all aspects. Now the functionality designed by IBM can be truly appreciated and now prefer this to OpenOffice

what goes around...
I remember running Lotus Symphony on my IBM AT (late 1980's). It did WP, spreadsheets, graphs & rudimentary databases. We thought it was the dog's whatsits.
