This is the software publisher's description.
Powerful x86 virtualization products for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). See "About VirtualBox" for an introduction; see "innotek" for more about our company.
Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), and OpenBSD.
VirtualBox is being actively developed with frequent releases and has an ever growing list of features, supported guest operating systems and platforms it runs on. VirtualBox is a community effort backed by a dedicated company: everyone is encouraged to contribute while innotek ensures the product always meets professional quality criteria.
On the VirtualBox site, you can find sources, binaries, documentation and other resources for VirtualBox.
VirtualBox 4.1 is a major upgrade. You can now clone your virtual machine (ideal for creating a backup version of your new VM), support for 1TB of memory under a 64-bit operating system, improved UI and more.

you say insufficient testing, but the reality is insufficient reading comprehension... the article clearly says version 3+ supports win7 not the version you tried. Works fine for me...

Doesn't work with Win 7 RC
Downloaded 2.2.4, ran Win 7 RC inside it and got a number of error messages including a link to download VirtualBox 2.2.2. Evidently insufficient testing.

I like it but...
This freebie completely replaced Vmware in my workstations and laptop, I wish we had less problems updating the program and that new versions were better tested... there are always regressions to be fixed, and I always feel - somewhat - a beta tester. The program is excellent, I wonder when will we have full VHD and VMDK support. 4/5 stars

Licensing mislabelled
Great article. Virtualbox is a useful product and as the article points out, available under the GPL, making it Free/Open Source Software rather than "freeware" as the label in the sidebar says. "freeware" is generally a pejorative reserved for closed source, but free of charge, packages. So in the side bar, the label "type; freeware" should be changed to read "type: open Also it is not limited to Windows platforms as the host system. You can run Virtualbox on host systems with Ubuntu, Debian, or pretty much any other linux and even the BSDs and Solaris. vnunet.com comment: we are restricted by our CMS which doesn't have an option for 'opensource' at this stage. Freeware is the only similar option.
