Despite implementing the latest anti-spyware or anti-virus tool, you’re only as good as your latest definition update. Should a virus go live and you’re one of the first to receive the bad file, this may result in system chaos - unable to boot in to your machine, access files and more.
The solution is to build yourself a rescue disc that you can use to boot in to your computer, if you experience issues in the future. Of course, you don’t need to have this rescue CD on disc just ‘in case’, you could borrow someone else’s computer, download the latest version and burn this to disc.
Avira AntiVir Rescue CD is such as tool. It’s a self-contained Linux-based operating system with components required to scan, salvage and recover your system and/or individual files. If you can’t boot in to your computer, this is ideal.
Note that the Rescue CD is updated frequently by Avira, so it always contains the latest definition updates.

Avira Rescue CD
Based on my personal experience it is useless and a waste of time and effort. It did not deliver what it is supposed to do. It did not even start the scan, giving a "-z drive" error message which is really frustrating for an ordinary user. If this rescue system is for Windows users, then the UI should speak Windows language, i.e. not Lynux, especially for Drives and Directories, and if it is meant for IT experts, then publicize it as such.It would be helpful to explain the "-z" error and how to overcome it.

F-Secure do a version that's much better and actually works.
F-Secure do a version that's much better and actually works. The boot disc can download the latest virus definitions, or you can simply get them from their website and place on an EMPTY usb flash drive. http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/security/security-lab/tools-and-services/rescue-cd/

Didn't work for me
Not sure if it's GOOD or NOT. Booted from disk, was first in German, which is fine since there is a flag later on you can click to switch to English, however, would be a GREAT FIRST option. After it loaded, the graphics were so choppy, couldn't really see anything and all boxes were blacked out after I hit scan. The only thing I could see was a very faint progress bar and it was froze up, after an hour, decided to restart. That's as far as I can get with it.
