TweakUI is a free download that gives you access to numerous systems settings that are not easily available in Windows.

Without TweakUI the only way that you can change these settings is through the use of a program such as REGEDIT, which is best left to experts.

TweakUI is a standalone program in Windows XP, but for older systems the program is installed as a control panel. Both versions of TweakUI do the same thing, namely they allow you to customise various elements of the user interface.

This means that you can do things such as menu fading, adding a shadow to cursors, configuring the task bar, changing the location of standard folders such as My Photos and My Music, and assigning system beeps to keyboard combinations.

The range of options is truly mind-boggling but should be approached with caution.

TweakUI also includes ways of customising internet and Explorer settings, as well as deleting internet and computer history files. It can also be used to help repair problems with your PC, add and remove programs and documents, tweak your mouse button settings and even rename core desktop items such as the Recycle Bin.

TweakUI really is the Swiss army knife of Windows. Fortunately, if things get out of hand, you can easily use TweakUI to restore your computer back to its system defaults.
