Fast broadband is available to just about everyone. BT recently launched their 8Mbps broadband which, generally speaking, can operate faster than most Internet servers can distribute files. Your broadband could be faster than the web sites you visit.
With this in mind, it means you have spare capacity and it means you could realistically share your bandwidth across other computers, whether those computers are part of your home network or within a shared house where you contribute to the one broadband connection.
Your key problem is monitoring and allocating bandwidth between these users. If you have one 8Mbps connection and you share that between two users, it doesn’t mean that they have 4Mbps each – one user might hog the bandwidth playing an online game or downloading a huge file from the Internet. The other user might be limited to nothing more than dialup speeds, as a result.
Bandwidth Controller is a bandwidth management tool that enables you to limit and share bandwidth for up to 25 users. You can go much further and close of certain ports for particular users, give priority boosts to certain functions (such as a VOIP conversation) and even guarantee bandwidth service levels for particular users. If you’re lucky enough to have a 24Mbps connection, you could easily guarantee a 2Mbps connection for a user, for example.
