Virus attacks are all too common and Avira AntiVir can protect against these menaces and others including worms, trojans and dialers.
The AntiVir Guard is constantly working in the background and checks every file as it is used by Windows or other software. This includes heuristic scanning to check for viruses that have not been formally identified.
Scans can also be started manually or scheduled at daily or weekly intervals.
Should a virus be found, it can either be removed or moved to a quarantine area.
This new version is a brand new release, with a new name, improved user interface and much more.

Continue To Be Pleased with Avira's Free A/V
Having used Avira's free A/V since v8 was released in the spring of 2008, I continue to be pleased with v2012. Compared to the previous version (AntiVir Personal 10), there is one less process running and approximately 30% less RAM consumed in quiescence. On an ancient laptop (P-4M @ 1.8 GHz and 1 GB DDR @ 133MHz, the system's response is noticeably faster, with a shorter boot time; the API has been freshened in a pleasing manner (purely subjective, of course). Internal configurations (Expert mode) are similar to the previous version, with some modest, yet useful, improvements. The initial full system scan (100 GB HDD; 67% occupied) took 46 minutes (with heuristics set to maximum and all scans and Threat categories selected, except for "Unusual runtime compression"). Although the Ask.com Toolbar can be explicitly declined during installation, three of its files remain in the program's folder (C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop): apnic.dll, ApnStub & apntoolbarinstaller; they have been blocked from Internet access using the Blocked Application feature in Comodo Firewall.
