Taking a screengrab of your desktop is fairly easy and straightforward if you simply want to grab the whole screen, using the 'Print Screen' key on your keyboard.
However, if you have a non-standard keyboard without this function, or simply want to grab a particular area of the screen (or an active window), you'll need to resort to a software alternative.
FastStone Screen Capture is a powerful, flexible and intuitive screen-capture utility. It enables you to capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, freehand-selected regions and scrolling windows/web pages.
It has innovative features such as a floating capture panel, hotkeys, resizing, cropping, text annotation, printing, the facility to email your grab and much more.

30 day limit introduced
Unfortunately it seems that with this release they have limited usage to 30 days unless you purchase a license. Disappointed as I have found this tool to be very useful but will now look elsewhere.

Does exactly what it says on the tin
When speed is of the essence then I can't rate this program highly enough. Here at work we use a DOS system, stacked with data but an unholy pain in the rear to print, so Faststone is just a ctrl+PRT SCR away! 2 buttons and it's ready to select your area. Alternatively two other buttons will capture all of the screen and it's there in the program ready to edit or save. Total time from wanting a screen grab to having one? Two seconds!!!
