Download this demo version of 21st Century Sailing Simulator and sail away without leaving your desktop. This sailing simulator will give you the impression of being on a real boat, albeit with a US crew shouting instructions at you, where you are in control of the rudder, mainsail, jib and spinnaker.

A Global Positioning System sits next to a control panel and third-eye view of your boat. You can choose different angles from which to view the boat, although in this demo you do not get a view from the cockpit. The game aims to be realistic enough to satisfy advanced sailors, but also intuitive enough for first-timers to learn the basics of sailing.

You can simply practice your sailing skills or compete in online races. The aim is to vary your point of sail to take advantage of varying wind shifts and achieve maximum speed.

The sailboat, floating on a calm sea in sunny weather, has a distinct holiday-like feel about it. Which is nice. And the realistic sound effects, photo quality graphics and nautical theme make this an unusual but compelling application to have on your desktop.
