Set up your own server and you’ll find that people are forever trying to hack in to the system. Whatever you do, they’ll attempt to find a backdoor. The snag is that it’s not like you can set up a CCTV system and watch for people trying to break in to your store. The only sign of intrusion is their IP address and, unless you know what you’re looking for, trying to extract information from their IP address isn’t always easy.

There are a few free online tools that you can use to trace the IP back to the source, but the information provided is usually supplied in a format that only system administrators can understand.

SmartWhois is a tool that you can use to trace back information about a person’s IP address. You can find the domain name, country of origin and even the technical support or administrator for the domain. This should enable you to contact someone associated with their domain to inform them that their system has been used to hack or cause issues with your online store.
