Buy a new PC and it will ship with a large hard drive. The obvious choice is to split this in to multiple partitions so that you have a drive for your important media files. These can be audio tracks you’ve purchased online and are given a once-only right to download and store on your machine. It’s only right that you’d want to keep a regular backup of these files.
A wise choice would be Acronis True Image. This is backup and restore software that will enable you to select a drive or drive partition and then select an output for your backup. If it’s a small partition, you could easily backup online. Alternatively, a blank DVD or external hard drive. As Acronis True Image supports incremental backup, every time you run another backup of the same source, in the future, only updated or altered files will be backed up. With the new one-click backup, it means you can setup your source/destination and other settings, then click one button for the backup to start.
Acronis True Image offers far more than drive backup. Try&Decide enables you to create self-contained area on your drive so you can test new software without it affecting your PC. You can then install and test the new software and immediately remove, without having to uninstall. If you ever need to install a larger hard drive, use the Clone Disk function to move across the content from your existing drive.
Cleansing tools are included from the old Acronis DriveCleanser tool, which used to be a standalone application. These tools will shred files and documents so they can’t be retrieved and also enable you to safely erase the contents of your drive, in case you need to sell on your PC or ditch an old drive.
The latest Acronis True Image 2012 ships with file synchronisation, so you can keep data in sync, between multiple computers (desktop and laptop) and another brand new user-interface, which is much improved over the previous revision.

Another missed option?
Thanks for a good review! It looks like Acronis True Image Home 2012 doesn't have Application Settings backup option, this feature was available in previous versions of Acronis True Image. I used it to backup my Mozilla FireFox settings and once or twice recover from the backup. I came across another review of Acronis True Image Home 2012 with examples and step by step instructions of using the new Synchronization feature here http://www.allacronis.com/acronis-true-image-home-review.php

Better off with StorageCraft...
Prefer ShadowProtect from StorageCraft, it's easier to use and completely reliable (unlike some image based backup solutions). Their Hardware Independent Restore has saved my bacon more than once. It does what is says on the tin.

Bought it, can't install, no support reply for 1 month, waste of cash
I bought it new from Amazon the serial number is in-valid and there is NO support, for 1 month, no reply, no help the phone number goes into a loop suggesting I use the web, which no-one answers. Don't waste your money.

try BounceBack from CMS Products
I found a better solution. BounceBack Essential from CMS Products (available from Amazon) creates a copy of the system drive on an external drive on the USB port. Once created, you can start the PC from that drive - no fiddling around restoring stuff. When you are ready to fix the internal drive it's just a couple of clicks and it copies everything back. I found keeping the backup drive up-to-date is simple too. I just attach it when convenient and it copies the changes but you could leave it attached and it does that every hour. This is so simple to use and it has saved me hours of work re-installing Windows from the CDs. They've got a free trial now on their web site.

had old version 8
had old version 8 and never received an upgrade offer. Thanks too all who posted a link for this great deal. As for upgrade buy now link, I just called (Sunday no less) and had a easy time in placing my order - called because I wanted to use my checking debit card and the online form seemed to only accept a CC.

Finally, something that worked
I bought True Image 11 because it is the first software I found that worked. Yes, it can create images that you can use to restore your system- you know that, but this software also can back up your drive to another drive using a partition copy and it makes it bootable. I tried so many times to get Partition Magic to do that, but sadly, PM informs you during the process that it won't be bootable- almost worthless. With a partition copy, you just need one external drive. If you are doing an image backup, your may have your image written on an external drive, but will probably need another external to test the image because you would not want to risk restoring over your working main drive. Sure it has tons of features that I haven't even looked into, but for a simple way to get a solid backup, buy this software

Image backup to DVD?
The old v9 does not have a simple way to create a bootable image DVD that really works - why o' why do these software people always get it so wrong? vnunet comment: a quick check of the trial or the Acronis website would show that you can create a bootable recovery disc. Paragon also give you the option to create a bootable recovery disc in their backup software.

Acronis True Image 10 Home
When you get to the page where you see the version 9.1 it's because that is the Workstation version. On the right hand side, the last link is for Home version.

Fixed
The Acronis TI 10 'buy now' is fixed. Sadly we have to rely on a third party who manages the Acronis e-store to update their database. It took some time to be updated. However, I was of the understanding that a v9 e-store purchase made after the launch of v10 would enable a free v10 automatic upgrade. Let me know if it hasn't. Anyway, e-store link correctly showing v10 now.

Version Problem
Great software. However the buy now link takes you to a Version 9.. Bad news if you've already download version 10 (demo version)
