Verdict

A word processor that is well worth considering if you don't need or can't afford the functionality that Word offers.

Marketed as a replacement for Windows NotePad or WordPad Crypt Edit 4.1 actually offers much more functionality making it an ideal option for the average user's word processing needs.

It looks similar to WordPad and Word, so anybody familiar with these will have little problems getting to grips with Crypt Edit.

It can open Word documents and save files in the .doc format (via a free plug-in), along with text and rich text files. It also has the ability to encrypt files for total security. This feature is not very well documented though, reducing its effectiveness somewhat.

All the expected functions are featured, including the usual text formatting tools, and the ability to load graphics, media clips, PowerPoint slides, graphs and much more.

Various free plug-ins are available that add extra functionality, including a spell-checker and internet import options. These let you load a document from a website or the source code of a web page itself.
