Back in the late 90s, surfing the web, without the advanced search facilities we have now, was hit and miss. It was genuinely exciting finding new sites that shared your interests. Often it was a case of finding the ‘links’ page on a particular website and then following them until you find another site of interest. Find a site and add it to your bookmarks and your ‘links’ on your own homepage.
These days people have become lazy. They search through Google and other engines and rarely leave the first page from the search results. StumbleUpon is an interesting system which will recommend sites based on your interests, so you can find new sites that recommended by other users.
An alternative is to recommend them yourself through your favourite social networking site, such as Facebook or Digg. Shareaholic is an add-on for Firefox that enables you to share a page from within your browser, when you visiting the site. You don’t need to do any work, either. As long as you have an account with the remote social networking site, simply select the place (Digg, Facebook, MySpace, StumpleUpon and others) where you want to share your website and then simply submit.
Once you have submitted a page or site, you can see how many times other users have visited your recommendation.
