If you need something with more features than Notepad but don?t want Word, Copy Writer is a great alternative.

CopyWriter will open and save files in plain text, Rich Text Format and Microsoft Word and has some basic formatting options such as Bold, Italic and alignment. Unfortunately there is no spell check but the status bar at the bottom of the screen keeps a count of the number of words and pages in your document.

A Writers mode lets you change the width of the column making it easier to read what you have written.
