WinGuard Free Edition offers a simple yet effective method of locking numerous aspects of Windows to prevent tampering.
It can be used to lock programs, folders or files and a few other predefined elements. Once locked these items are only accessible to those with the correct password.
A small icon sits in the system tray (although this can be hidden if you would prefer). The program is password protected for security.
Program locking is limited to 20 pre-selected programs that include ScanDisk, Registry Editor, Remove Programs, Outlook Express, Internet Options and Windows Media Player.
Absolutely any file or folder can be encrypted or decrypted at the click of a button.
Other items such as the Desktop, Windows Explorer and Task Manager can also be locked.
This free version also comes with a pop-up blocker.

Wingaurd may not decrypt your files
I purchased Winguard Pro Premium Edition. Initially I had problems loading the Product Key as the program stated that the key was ?Out of Date?. It required me to download a new key from the website. The web site offered no way of doing this. After one month, Winguard had still not responded to any emailed requests for help. The web site offers no Help Function. It takes you in circles looking for the Help section. However, I continued to use the free trial version of the encryption program which seemed to work well. I then suffered a Hard Drive failure. After backing up onto a new hard disc, NONE of my encrypted programs would open. Newly encrypted files would open and close fine but none of my restored files. After two weeks, apart from one email saying they would respond within 48 hours, I am still waiting for assistance from Winguard. Conclusion: a potentially good encryption program, BUT with NO support. Furthermore there is the potential to loose the ability to decrypt files. DO NOT use this program without a full unencrypted back up.

Not impressed
I just simply did not like the way this worked and it has a dreadful and very untidy installer.

Forget WGP !
Free version seems to work but DO NOT UPGRADE TO PAID VERSION! Complete crap and the company NEVER responds to ANY email!. Stay away!! vnunet.com comment: we always recommend you install and use the trial version before deciding whether to purchase. Company is legit.
