OpenOffice is a fully fledged office application suite, complete with a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation graphics program.
OpenOffice will be more familiar to some people as Sun Microsystems' StarOffice, which until recently was a free download.
With the launch of StarOffice 6, Sun changed its policy: the full office application suite would now cost (a still very reasonable) £50, while this completely free version is available to download.
Both share the same source code, with a few differences. OpenOffice does not include the StarOffice Adabas D database, certain fonts (especially Asian language ones), some templates and certain file filters. This is because Sun pays to license third-party code in StarOffice which it doesn't have permission to give away in OpenOffice.
But yes, you do get a fully featured word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation graphics program that are all compatible with Microsoft Office, along with an HTML editor, a maths and a drawing package.
It's the best choice if you're on a tight budget, fancy trying something different or don't want to hand over more money to Microsoft.
It is a large download, so be prepared for a long wait and use a download manager for convenience.

Confused
I have just downloaded this and it seemed to go ok but it is not in any usable form i.e. it's a folder on my desktop and I haven't a clue where to start. Help!! PS.I still have a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 installed on my PC which has an icon on the start-up menu. Should I uninstall this first?

OO2.4
So far so good! It really is a no-brainer - completely uninstalled MS Office and am glad to get rid of it.

Simply awesome
Probably about 90% of the features of MS office, but at 0% of the price. It's faster, it's less clunky and bloated, and it works just as well. There's no reason to buy MSOffice or any of the other ridiculously overpriced productivity software collections as long as OpenOffice is around.

Downloads in a few minutes
Paul I'm puzzled as to why you say it takes a long time to download, it's only 125 meg and downloads quickly*. It's an awesome office suite & I can't imagine why anyone would spend their hard earned cash on MS Office, when this gem is free. *vnunet.com note: it will download quickly if you have a fast broadband connection and you're downloading from a fast mirror!

Download or get it on CD Rom
> "It is a large download, so be prepared for a long wait and use a download manager for convenience." There are also a number of community distributors who supply OOo on CD, sometimes with value added features or more Open Source programs.
