MusicBrainz describes itself as a "user maintained community music meta database", but don't let that put you off. The idea is actually a terrific one.
In a nutshell, MusicBrainz users upload music tags to the MusicBrainz internet database so that other users can avail themselves of them. This kind of service suits people whose music CD collections are a little more eclectic than purely mainstream stuff.
With the MusicBrainz Tagger application, you can semi-automatically tag all the music in your music collection, setting it to plough through an entire directory to update the tags automatically. Of course, it's not foolproof, so you'll need to check through the results but it's a handy way of automating the process.
Furthermore, the server where the MusicBrainz data is stored can be accessed using other audio playback software, so you can make the most of the details of its directory without having to use the MusicBrainz Tagger software.
The software allows you to write both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags too.
