Ad-Aware has been around for ages and this is a major update. As it's free, it's worth comparing against your current anti-spyware suite

There are a number of security applications that reside on our ‘most popular’ list for a reason. Not necessarily because they are immensely popular, but primarily as they’ve been available for a long time, so have become tried and tested technology.
The problem with security software is that it generally doesn’t appear to be doing anything, until we experience a problem with our system. At that stage, your security software has failed and it’s time to curse, move on and look for more reliable technology. However, if it doesn’t fail, why move across to new security software?
Ad-Aware Free Edition is, as the name describes, free anti-virus & anti-spyware technology that has recently had a major revamp. The technology has been around for ages, which is why we suggest it’s one of those tried-and-tested AV suites that we can recommend to both new and existing Ad-Aware users.
New features in Ad-Aware Free 9 include "Dedicated Detection" which will look inside a potential problematic file and determine whether it's safe or not.

Ad-Aware Free Internet Security 8.3.3
Having tried and failed miserably to download 8.3.1 (see below) I then tried this later version. This time it was more successful and proceeded past the language choice (in English!) and past Update Manager before the screen again froze on the crash dump page. However this time when I managed to re-start my computer, Ad-Aware was loaded on my desktop; clicking on it I was then able to Update and run the software. I'm glad I persevered and now have Ad-Aware back as a very useful free tool ; for several years I've used previous versions to clean up my computer and give me peace of mind. Though with the 2 earlier versions, I did not had the problem of the screen freezing / crash dump during installation.

Not impressed
I've used AdAware free and paid for products in the past, and they've always worked adequately, so I downloaded this to test it out. It seems quite 'memory hungry' and seemed to take forever to run updates...not really what I'd hoped for. Not a programme I'll be recommending

Ad-Aware Free Internet Security 8.3.1
I've tried downloading this several times, but on each occasion my computer (Vista 32bit) crashes and dumps. I even tried removing the old Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition - which was working fine, but it makes no difference. To say that I was upset with C-Net for sending me endless messages to up-grade to the new edition - is an understatement. I've just been running this 127 Mb upgrade; would it make a difference to save and then run ?

Ad-Aware 2214510
Free version available is very good, however as picture shown on page 18 in Computer Active issue 289 I hoped it would be the PRO version.

Peace of mind.
I have used varius releases of this over 5 years I recomend it to all my family and friends as I have found that with, spybot running as wellit manages to keep my machine running with no problems is clear on what it finds and makes removing it foolproof. Both these programs make being computer illiterate no excuse for running an infected (and usally a slow and unstable ) machine.
