SAN FRANCISCO: Michael Dell threw out some quite startling security stats during his keynote at Oracle OpenWorld on Tuesday.
Dell only recently entered the security arena through its acquisition of SecureWorks earlier this year, and the firm's chief executive shared some data from the division with the San Francisco audience.
Dell began the security portion of his talk by likening the acquisition to a certain Brad Pitt film. "SecureWorks is like Fight Club. The first rule about SecureWorks is you don't talk about SecureWorks," he said.
Luckily for the audience, Dell then proceeded to do exactly that and shed some light on the murky goings on at the division.
According to Dell, the firm monitors a whopping 15 billion security events every day, and from this task, discovers 100,000 new threats each day.
He added that $1bn is stolen each year just from small and medium businesses owing to cyber crime.
Unfortunately for companies of all sizes, as well as consumers, the popularity of connected devices like tablets and smartphones means that these already huge numbers are only likely to increase, rather than fall anytime soon.
