A few weeks after the last major release (v5), Firefox v6 for Windows and for Mac is available. Before you go hunting to find a list of new features, as the major releases are now separated by 6 weeks of development, you may end up disappointed. Firefox 6 does ship with a new Permissions Manager, improved performance and enhanced support for HTML5. The next release, Firefox 7, ships with much-improved memory management, making it a more essential upgrade. Firefox 7 will be available by the end of September. In the meantime, the legacy browser Firefox 3.6.20 is still being developed, primarily to support the many business users who have yet to upgrade.
VirtualBox 4.1.2 for Windows and for Mac was updated this week. Although only a minor upgrade, this fantastic free tool will enable you to host a virtual operating system. You can run and test a Linux operating system on top of your Windows host or simply run another Windows-based operating system to test new software. If you're a developer, you could use VirtualBox 4.1.2 to run Windows XP, enabling you to test your software against the old operating system.
Process Monitor 2.96 is a powerful free tool which you can use to determine problematic tasks running on your system. It's far more detailed than the supplied Windows Task Manager, making it much easier to find and kill a problematic task.
LinkedIn for Android 1.1.3 is the social networking tool for business users. Use LinkedIn to connect to existing contacts and find new connections. Last but not least, Evernote for Windows 4.5 received a big update this week. if you've never used Evernote, it's a note taking and sharing tool that enables you to add your ideas, thoughts, notes, photos and other data to various notebooks and then keep these notebooks synchronised across your computers. You can then choose to share a notebook with other users - ideal if you want to create a list of "to do" items that your and colleagues need to work through.
