Surely it must mean something when one of the biggest new releases of the week is another web browser update. This week has seen both Opera 11.11, a minor update to the existing browser, plus a brand new Firefox 5 Beta, which is the first early release.
Of course, browser wars aside, there are plenty of other new and updated applications. FileZilla 3.5 is a powerful cross-platform free FTP client. FTP clients are still essential tools for maintaining a remote server, uploading new content or for minor admin. There is also a FileZilla 3.5 Portable which you can take on the road.
Miro 4 received a major upgrade. This is a cross-platform video playback tool which enables you to store, manage, stream and share video across the internet. Ideal for users who work in video post-production or home users who like to download and share video content. Some users have experienced a few issues with Miro 4 (compared to previous versions), so use with caution.
Defraggler 2.05 was released. This free drive defragmentation tool will enable you to keep your system running at peak speeed. Free for home users, it's worth installing on your laptop where even a slight slowdown will affect usability. There's also a Defraggler 2.05 Portable edition.
If you want to browse the internet without leaving a trace, Hotspot Shield 1.58 will be your ideal security tool. This app gives you a secure VPN so you can hit the internet without any website knowing your location, source or other personal info.
A number of Android apps have gone live this week, with more to follow. These include Trillian for Android, which will enable you to chat using just about any chat API, through your mobile. File Expert for Android will give you access to your Android phone from your PC.
Whilst we wait for O&O DiskImage 6, due on-sale in June, O&O Software have released a minor upgrade, O&O Defrag 5.6, a powerful enterprise-level defragmentation tool for business and professional users.
