High drama at the App Store

It has been an eventful few days with Apple's App Store. The inclusion of a pair of controversial applications has the public up in arms.

First, there's the inclusion of the so-called 'Gay Cure' app. Developed by a right-wing Christian group, the application aimed to help users "recover" from homosexuality. As might be expected, some people took issue with the inclusion of the application on the App Store. After more than 150,000 people signed an online petition to have the app removed, Apple obliged.

Obviously the group behind the controversial app will be upset, but there's not much they can do. Apple has removed applications for much less objectionable content and developers agree to follow Apple's rules when they sign up and create developer accounts.

Then there's the case of the DUI checkpoint apps. Developers are offering tools which can help motorists avoid checkpoints set up to catch drunk drivers. As one might again expect, law enforcement and government groups are not happy that the applications are being offered. A group of US senators has already called on Apple and RIM to remove the applications from their stores.

Given that Apple just pulled an app due to an online petition, it's a safe bet that the DUI checkpoint app isn't long for this world either. The US government has a fair amount of weight to throw around, and the application does more or less help to facilitate unlawful behaviour.

People who are upset about losing their DUI Checkpoint app are well-advised to take a deep breath, think about their loved ones, and download something like this app instead.
