A new social network? A synchronization service? A software feature for the iOS?
Speculation is running rampant about what Apple may be up to after a recent patent filing was unearthed. The Patently Apple blog is reporting that the company has filed in Europe for a trademark on the term "Social."
The filing doesn't go into too much detail, but Patently Apple reports that the filing is in regards to social networking and looks to involve components of Apple's mobile devices and the iOS operating system.
No mention was made of the iTunes Ping social networking service, but if Apple is indeed planning to introduce a "Places" feature to iOS then there's a good chance Ping would be involved as well.
That doesn't mean the feature is coming in the near future, or that it's coming at all. Just because Apple has filed for a patent on the product doesn't mean that the company has finished the development proces, and Apple has filed for patents in the past on products that never really materialised.
