Security experts are warning users to be on their guard for malicious search links related to today's earthquake in north-eastern Japan after blackhat SEO-ers again proved how quick they are to react to breaking news.
In a blog posting, Trend Micro threat response engineer Norman Ingal said that the attacks began almost immediately after the 8.9 magnitude quake, which has sparked widespread fires and a deadly tsunami.
"We immediately monitored for any active attacks as soon as news broke out, and true enough we saw web pages inserted with key words related to the earthquake," he wrote.
"One of the active sites that we saw used the keyword 'most recent earthquake in Japan' and led to FAKEAV variants we currently detect as Mal_FakeAV-25."
Blackhat SEO is becoming increasingly common as cyber criminals look for ways to infect more and more machines.
It's as yet unclear what kind of malware was involved in the attacks.
