Unless you're working with video, just who needs a 500GB hard drive? You're never going to fill that ripping CDs from your audio collection. Sure, one option is to use the space to rip movie DVDs and use your drive to stream the movie to your TV.
Another option is to use a tool such as Alcohol 52% to grab your computer CDs and store them on your computer. This has a number of functions. If you work in DTP, you could store a copy of your fonts reference DVD on your drive, rather than having to refer to your library. If you're a gamer, you could store your game CDs on your computer rather than having to keep swapping CDs when you need to play a different game.
