Microsoft has designed the Natural Keyboard to help minimise the risk of RSI. The arc of the wrist rest has been re-moulded and it's even more comfortable than previous models. The basic layout of the keys is unchanged, with the familiar split angle allowing wrists to fall in a more natural position.
To set this keyboard apart from its competitors, Microsoft has created 16 quick access 'hotkeys' and two USB ports. The hotkeys fall into four categories: Internet (for fast navigation around the Net), email, multimedia, and custom. The hotkeys are easily configured through the software supplied - for example, the search key can be set to fire up your Web browser with the page of your choice. The basic functions for media playing are all at your fingertips, including a useful mute key.
The keyboard can be connected via PS/2 only, or USB and PS/2. Most modern PCs come with two USB ports, and plugging in the Pro via USB gains you an additional USB port since there are two neatly positioned on the back of the keyboard. With USB peripherals widely available, this is a good feature and the easy access is appreciated. Overall build quality is excellent: the keys even make a deeper sound rather than the usual annoying click.
Ultimately you shouldn't choose a keyboard based on its features but on comfort. If you haven't used a natural-style keyboard before, you'll probably find it quite unpleasant for the first few weeks. But once you've adjusted, there's no turning back. The Natural Keyboard Pro is without doubt an excellent keyboard, and it's well worth the £49.99 price tag.
