12 Dec 2012, Dan Worth , V3
Google has revealed that it has no plans to develop dedicated apps for Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8 for its business app products such as Gmail or Drive.
Speaking to V3, the firm's product management director at Google Apps, Clay Bavor, said that due to what it sees as a lack of interest from its clients on the systems, it is holding back on any work at present.
"We have no plans to build out Windows apps. We are very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8," he said.
"If that changes, we would invest there, of course."
Instead Bavor said the firm was committed to continually improving and updating its iOS and Android products.
"In 2012 we've laid some of the ground work and really improved the experience of our core apps on mobile devices, such as adding native editing of spreadsheets for both iOS and Android apps," he said.
"We really see these as the first versions of our mobile experience, though, so we will continue to make big investments in mobile in 2013 with the goal of having beautiful mobile apps."
Google is determined to make this push around its enterprise offerings as the demand for mobility continues to rocket and the use of cloud systems become an accepted way of working.
"Cloud is no longer a mystery. Almost every company we talk to is going through a monumental change where everyone is using not just one or two devices but sometimes as many as five with tablets, laptops, smartphones and desktop machines," said Bavor.
"The only way you can really provide a user experience that fits this is by using a cloud architecture, so staff can get data on all devices and ensure applications are up to date."
Despite the growing push to the cloud, issues around reliability and availability can still cause headaches, as was witnessed on Monday when both Drive and Gmail dropped offline for around 30 minutes, causing outrage from users.
Bavor said the firm was "less than happy" about the situation and it was "all hands on deck" as it worked to determine the cause.
"People run their lives on our products so we hold ourselves to very high standards. so we are never happy with any sort of issues and we aim to do better," he added.
Google has since revealed a software update for its load balancers contained code that caused its systems to "incorrectly interpret a portion of Google datacenters as being unavailable".
This caused some services such as Gmail and Drive to go offline, but the system was able to keep others including Maps and Search online.
The importance of the business market to Google was recently outlined by its UK head of enterprise Thomas Davies in a recent interview with V3 on its ongoing push around big data and collaboration that it sees as key offerings for firms of all sizes.
Do you agree?
Google = anti-competitive
Dump Google now!

bad move
Maybe more people would be willing to get a windows 8 phone if google would just get their heads out of their... You know. I have knock-off gtalk and google voice apps on my Lumia 920 and could really use the real thing... I'm not ever going back to android and am bored with iOS.

Who needs apps
Surely you don't actually need an app for Gmail. Can't you just load your browser and go to the gmail website, or does Windows 8 not allow the Internet???!!!

hm...
Oh well, I will miss google almost as much as I missed altavista

Working fine for me
Been running Win 8 a month now, use GMail all the time in Chrome, and the drive app is working just fine thank you.

What's the message?
I do struggle to recall what apps they have than run on any native desktop OS. Just some syncing stuff isn't it (email migration and Drive)? Anything else runs as apps under Chrome?! They do have wider coverage on mobile though - well Android and IOS. So Chrome is supported on Win 8, in which case that's the most important of Google's 'Apps' that already is supported!? Not sure what Clay is saying... In effect, they are already doing Win 8, Android, IOS and will do other platforms as they get market traction. Is that news? Meanwhile all their web based tools work on almost any platform...

More directed at Windows Phone
"that is not where the users are"
Microsoft is what needs dumping.
No one wants WinPho, and lack of google support on it will make it even less likely to succeed..
Android
Linux
No Microsoft

Anti-competitive
Google is trying to use it's weight to push its google apps and google android at the expense of users. Anti-competitive practices only hurt users!
I love Gmail, but I still prefer Office over Google Apps and WP over Android.

Windows 8 is fine without google apps
I've been using the included Windows Mail app and it works flawlessly with Gmail accounts. It's not lack of interest, but lack of need.

Google .. chormebook for your work? jaja ridiculous!
We will work on the Chromebook? Lords of google people use a PC for work, not just for facebook, twitter and google+!

...seeing as the Windows 7 ones still work with Win8
Why do we need a new specific app for Windows 8? Google Drive app for Windows 7 works flawlessly in Windows 8.

Windows 8 - by Fischer Price
Yup, win 8 is for tablets or toys; no wonder Google won't write apps for it, although its the right age group!

640K ram is enough
"We have no plans to build out Windows apps. We are very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8,"
In this industry these kind of comments you usually pay a high price. Lets wait and see does it roll for both sides.

Idiots
God you people are idiots, all this means is that google is not going to make a Modern UI version of their apps (a Modern UI version would required compatibility with Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Phone 8) You'd think people reading a tech site wouldn't be such retards

we are on windows....
"will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8," they think everybody using android or iOS phones and chromebooks.... paranoiac community ))

A developer not developing? What a concept lol
Not developing for W8? First off, no need, the W7 apps work just fine under W8. They won't develop for Windows Mobile because of low market share. Once they creep over the 4% or 5% mark I'm sure Google will come around. Right now it makes sense to focus on the remaining 90% (iOS and its own Android) because that's where the money is. Google needs all the money it can get, especially with the billion dollar law suits Apples has against it still.

@John
Judging from some of these posts, some of them don't seem to able to find a way to use the web browser and can only check email via an "app"

windows phone does not need google
I have used WP for over 2 years never used any google apps the email on WP is flawless just type your address in and sync to your phone and calendar. Nokia drive/maps is every bit as good as google maps on wp8 again gmaps not needed and YouTube, well this may be the biggest blow but not a huge deal the Microsoft YouTube app takes you to the desktop site and there are plenty third party apps available. Google is just pissed because WP doesn't need there apps like Apple does an Microsoft doesn't come crying to them like Apple does either. Its not lack of sales its lack of interest in there apps with wp users they just don't need them. Bing is integrated and looks 100 times better than google app why would i down load it. Micro office built in why would i need google docs app. Email client in WP one of the best around windows live active calandar every bit as good as Gmail calandar and can do the same thing. Turn by turn navigation 3d mapping with offline maps Nokia maps built right in. If you are worried about this problem don't be.

Windows 8 a waste of time
Been computing since days of keypunch cards. Currently have 4 Pc's, 3 notebooks, 3 ipads, 2 iphones, ipod, 3 androids, 1 apple notebook and all were working seamlessly on my home network. Swapped one pc out for pc preloaded with windows 8 and lost 3 hours setting up network. Mail app is ridiculous if using Gmail. Better off going to desktop and working it off internet. Same goes for other apps as well. XP and Windows 7 were far superior than Windows 8. Windows 8 apps make you do twice the work for the same thing you did prior. Also, some apps do not have a print function in 8 and Gmail will not display photos correctly. It is not the Gmail's fault that photos do not display, Microsoft should have addressed the issue but these companies, both MS and Google are trying to force us to use their products. Open Source is coming fast and I se MS and Google falling on their asses just like Apple will. Proprietary Apps will die as third parties pop up. Look at what happened to IBM. They thought they were the shit. Remember Atari? How about Tandy. All these companies thought they could monopolize the market and force us to use their products by making it difficult to use non approved products and apps. Now their all but gone. Microsoft and Google will fall too if not careful. The next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs will take the world by storm and leave their predecessors in the dust.

Computer Companies have lost sight of their customers
Every change to your computer system has become a major headache. Computer companies fail to work with each other and every little change involve software upgrades or equipment. It is costly, frustrating and makes me want to refuse all changes whether they be better or not. Buying my Mother a new computer this month, then spent hours trying to get printer and scanner hooked up again...Only to find don't work with new computer at all. So bought new printer and scanner...Get a call now, she cann't print from gmail....What is Microsoft and Google doing not being compatible....If we lose access to all we had previously, then what good is system. I'll go back to hand written notes and photograph, at least they are still there when I want to see them. Don't have to buy new software and lose all my old letters and scrapbook files. The whole point in home system is to make my likfe easier....not scrap everything I worked so hard to organize.

So what...
Google's only interested in Apple apps because Apple can't make the ones people want and they're more than happy to create an app that allows them acces to thier biggest competitor's users' info.
GMail has been heading to the toilet anyway...Outlook.com was easy enough to setup and get all of my gmail stuff into...and it works flawlessly on WP.

Hey Google and Microsoft...Can't we all just get along?
Here I was sailing along just fine with my Sony All-In-One I5 with Windows 7. But it's a year old now and I wanted to keep up with growing technology. Dec 8, 2013 I upgraded to Windows 8. Now, I'm finding out that my my gmail won't sync contacts with the 8 people hub, gmail and many functions I did have in 7 don't work as nicely in 8. Please, please, please Google and Microsoft.....do what is necessary so that things progress for the end user. If you are doing your jobs, I should not be suffering with regrets like I am. I don't know where to turn. Should I go back to Windows 7? One thing is for sure, I'm not going to be forced to change my andoid phone to the Windows 8 phone so my phone and computer are compatible. I should know better and am reminded the hard way AGAIN that when you big companies try to be so "exclusive" that we are the ones who suffer. You're making me discover the problems one by one here at my house. This is not the way to win market share. Google, you're just making your andoid customers frustrated by not working to function better on Windows 8. I don't know who is a fault, Google or Microsoft but I would like it much better if we could all just get along. Right now, I hate you both for all the trouble I'm having.

this is bad news
this is bad news... google should just develop both a gmail app and drive app for windows 8, they should put the consumer first and not just doing some ego superiority competition

They are leaving out 60 + million users!
Whether you like it or not (and I like it), Windows 8 is here and is the future. The fact that Google won't produce apps for the OS is worrying in that it makes Google look dumb. I use and love Windows 8. I think they are not thinking of the customers if they don't produce those apps. Microsoft just announced that Windows 8 has sold 60 million copies. That number may be small right now, but it will slowly grow; and once people catch up to what Windows 8 is all about, that number will explode and everyone will be using the W8 OS.

i m using windows 8 phone n my primary email id is gmail.. this is stupid news.. how i can do without my phone synching gmail emails for me.. come on!!! get the app on windows 8 phones...

Fringe
Sorry @komai, but you made a mistake buying a Windows 8 phone. You bought an unsupported phone without a software base. Other app investors are shunning Windows 8 to concentrate on the more lucrative markets of iOS and Android. Why should they waste resources on a parallel development effort on a me-too phone with a tiny user base? Don't buy fringe hardware and complain about lack of software.
