Skype extends collaboration with Facebook video chat integration

Skype has bundled Facebook components into the latest version of the Skype Beta, allowing customers to view a list of Facebook friends and initiate video chats from within Skype.

The feature can be activated by linking a Skype account with a Facebook profile. Calls will then appear to the recipient as a normal Facebook video chat.

The release builds on the partnership between Skype and Facebook. The social site released a Skype mini-client earlier this year allowing users to perform video chats through the Facebook site.

"This new development is the latest example of how Skype is removing communication barriers and making it easier to connect with friends, family and business colleagues," said Rick Osterloh, vice president of products at Skype, in a blog post. "Our approach to social is about personal connections with people."

The release comes as Skype extends its collaboration offerings after the surprise $8.5bn acquisition by Microsoft in May.

Analysts have suggested that Skype could grow into a much larger communications and collaboration platform under Microsoft, and integrate with consumer and small business platforms.
