IBM plans storage onslaught

IBM is to roll out a range of interoperable storage technologies aimed squarely at the large data storage systems from rival EMC.

Big Blue claims it will drive sales away from EMC because its technology allows diverse storage units to communicate with each other, whereas its rival produces gateways that link only to its own devices.

The products include the IBM TotalStorage Network Attached Storage 300G, which allows local area network-based clients and servers to interoperate with existing storage area networks (Sans), and the IBM TotalStorage IP Storage 200i, an iSCSI appliance that connects users to pooled storage on a network.

iSCSI is an internet version of the SCSI technology used to attach hard disks and other devices to computers. IBM is working with Cisco, which acquired iSCSI developer NuSpeed in July, to promote the technology as an industry standard.

The TotalStorage 300G is a file server that can work with multiple storage systems, including IBM's Enterprise and Modular Storage Servers.

The TotalStorage 200i, which is designed for service providers, departments and workgroups, is an IP storage standard that transmits native SCSI over IP.

IBM also introduced storage networking packages aimed at companies of all sizes. These include IBM Modular Storage Server, Ultrium LTO tape automation, IBM StorWatch resource management software, Flash Copy and PPRP (peer-to-peer remote) copy middleware, plus a San Gateway and switches.
