Sales of wireless charging devices could grow as much as 65-fold over the next five years, say analysts.
Research firm iSuppli said that the market for wireless chargers, currently shipping roughly 3.6 million units per year, could expand to as much as 234.9 million units by 2014.
The company said that the growth would come in large part from the mobile phone market, where adoption from large vendors could trigger a massive increase in the use of wireless charging systems in devices ranging from digital cameras and media players to ultraportable PCs.
Another spur to growth could come from standardisation. iSuppli said that much of the growth will depend on whether vendors can settle on a standard technology. Currently, wireless charging methods range from magnetic induction techniques to near and far-field magnetic resistance.
Settling on a standard could help to kick off an explosion of growth for wireless charging, said iSuppli.
"Until the industry finds a standard to follow, the wireless charging industry will be fragmented, and consumers will hesitate to adopt any solution that could be compromised by the rival companies," explained iSuppli senior wireless research analyst Tina Teng.
"However, an open, standardised system will create a healthier competitive environment and prompt manufacturers to join forces, which will enhance consumer awareness and lead to adoption in the markets."
