VeriSign pushes forward with mobile security

VeriSign's VIP uses temporary codes to boost security

VeriSign has announced that it will extend the reach of its VIP smartphone security platform to more than 200 different mobile devices.

Initially, the VIP mobile platform supported around 90 handsets, including the iPhone and certain BlackBerrys.

The expanded line up now includes the iPod Touch, devices running Windows Mobile, J2ME-equipped handsets and several additional BlackBerry devices.

The news builds on the VIP programme which VeriSign launched in April. The software provides users with a constantly updated temporary code which allows access to payment information.

The use of temporary codes eliminates the need for a static password which can be guessed or stolen.

"With the latest release of VIP Access for Mobile, we are accelerating the ubiquitous adoption of strong authentication by making it fast, easy and free for mobile subscribers to install and use," said Kerry Loftus, vice president for user authentication at VeriSign.

"Our support of these additional smartphones will help enterprises deploy strong authentication among their employees, partners and customers at virtually no cost to them."
