My Endpoint Protector secures up to three home computers

Security firm CoSoSys is offering a free version of its Endpoint Protector for personal use, providing cloud-based protection against data loss and control over which devices can be plugged into a computer.

My Endpoint Protector secures up to three home computers against potential data theft and malware infection by allowing only specified USB devices to be plugged in. Customers can configure the service by logging into a CoSoSys web site.

The service makes enterprise-level device control and security available to home users at no cost and without the need for a server or maintenance tasks, according to the firm. Users can sign up for the free service at my.endpointprotector.com.

This kind of centralised control over USB peripherals is commonplace in business, where managers have to deal with employees plugging in their own music players, smartphones and other devices with built-in storage facilities.

This is a potential threat because it makes it easy for staff to copy sensitive files, and can introduce malware.

"We have seen an increasing adoption of device control and data loss prevention in the business segment and we want to offer this greatly needed security to individuals and home users to help them keep their personal data safe from the dangers of portable devices," said CoSoSys chief executive Roman Foeckl.

My Endpoint Protector can allow or deny access to specific devices, such as allowing the owner's smartphone but not their child's iPod, while the centralised online console allows all machines to be managed through any browser.

The service requires a small client application to be installed on all PCs and an internet connection. Windows PCs and Macs with OS X are supported.
