The record-breaking introduction of the Palm Pre smartphone was unable to prevent carrier Sprint-Nextel from further haemorrhaging customers.
Sprint said that it had lost around 257,000 subscribers over the past three months, from approximately 49.1 million in the first quarter of 2009 to approximately 48.8 million this quarter.
The company credited much of the decline to a drop of some 991,000 contract subscribers. Prepaid customers, however, were up.
Sprint recorded a net loss of $384m (£232m) over the quarter, despite what the company describes as a hugely successful launch of the Palm Pre smartphone. The handset opened in the US to record sales for Sprint.
Chief executive Dan Hesse noted the success of the Pre launch in summarising the company's recent performance.
"The widespread visibility surrounding our record-breaking June launch of the Palm Pre gave us an unprecedented opportunity to showcase these improvements to customers as a new Sprint," he said.
Do you agree?
Sprint = The Devil
Good riddance. Such poor customer support. I worked at a call center of theirs in the past and it was a nightmare what they did to their own customers! They also had us to things such as calling a persons most called # on their cell phone to see if we could find our customer. This is just regular accounts receivable. Also, half (probably more now) of their customer service reps are in India and other non native english speaking countries. GOOD RIDDANCE.
