PG Tips and Orange have teamed up to produce a kettle that switches itself on when it receives an SMS.
The kettle has a built-in mobile receiver that is activated by sending a message to the phone. This activates a mechanical lever that turns the kettle on remotely.
"We are always inventing new ways to improve the way tea is drunk," said Pete Harbour, PG Tips brand manager.
"It's a great gadget that will stop arguments over who's going to put the kettle on, give people longer to sit and watch their favourite TV programme and provide some teatime fun!"
The kettle, named ReadyWhenUR, has been developed for the launch of the latest Wallace and Gromit film, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and will be in the shops by January.

Boiling a kettle for making tea is normally a 2 step process
1: check water level and fill if necessary
2:boil kettle
I'm assuming they have a failsafe to prevent the attemted boiling of an empty kettle.
Can't see this one taking off

What happens if you have no credit?? or maybe you dont have a phone or have left it upstairs?
Im gonna have to walk to the kettle to put water in first, then go back to bed to text it?

What will be next? A SMS Microwave or cooker? On the way home, you have already put in some food, so send the message to start cooking it. ummm not a bad idea!!!

An expensive way to boil water, considering you still have to put the tea/coffee in the cup and pour.

Ridiculous.
My guess is that they're figuring that people can SMS the kettle on their way home from work so they can have tea as soon as they walk in the door. But don't those kettles only take about 3 minutes to boil the water anyway? Are people really that busy that they can't wait 3 whole minutes for boiling water?
