IT vendor Transtec has announced plans to add the Moab Adaptive HPC Suite (PDF) to its high performance computing offerings.
The Moab system, used in datacentres as well as public and private clouds, allows operators to get the most out of their hardware by switching automatically between operating systems to suit the workload.
"The continuing pressures to reduce costs, improve efficiency and limit complexity and risk are leading to widespread consolidation," said Ian Gilbert, director of business development at Adaptive Computing, which produces Moab.
"The move towards running multiple applications on a single cluster very often creates the need to run more than one operating system on the same cluster. The Moab Adaptive HPC Suite makes this possible, and dynamically changes the resources available to any given operating system in response to changing workloads."
The software can be configured to fit a variety of agreed service levels, and should allow datacentre managers to do more with less hardware.
