Microsoft quietly made Windows Vista Release Candidate 2 available for download late on Friday to technical beta testers and MSDN/TechNet subscribers.
The new build of Windows Vista offers a higher level of performance and stability as well as fixing many of the bugs in RC1, according to the Windows Vista team blog.
Windows chief Jim Allchin posted a special announcement which read: "People asked for it and here it is, Windows Vista RC2.
"There are thousands of quality improvements since RC1. You'll probably notice improvements in performance, application compatibility, as well as fit and finish work."
The new test build (5744) has a number of improvements and updates on previous builds, and has been through daily testing processes to refine quality and performance, Microsoft said.
The company warned that this build may not have the same level of support or servicing via Windows Update as RC1, and that users may not be able to upgrade from this build to the final version of Windows Vista.
"We are just around the corner from release to manufacturing [RTM] and shipping this great product to the world. This will be the last build prior to RTM, so please keep the feedback coming so we can hit the finish line," said Allchin.
The RC2 release will be available for a limited time only from Microsoft's Windows Vista Download site.

Bad Mac OS X knockoff
As usual Microsoft badly copies the looks and security of the Apple Macintosh operating system. As a Mac user I have only gotten one disk transmitted virus 17 years ago, none via emails, internet exploder or any other means, no other malware what so ever. It's not because there is a rapidly growing 20 plus million Mac market share which is smaller than the Windows market share. It's because the operating system and hardware work better together than seperate. There is no motivation behind Microsoft to solve the billions upon billions of dollars lost for consumersand buisnesses due to shoddy code written by them on purpose. On the otherhand Apple will die fast if they produced the crap Microsoft does because it will immediatly affect their hardware buisness. You want a safe, reliable computer that doesn't need a computer science degree to use, get a Mac.

build 5744 taken off line?
i sucessfully downloaded the iso yesterday. When I attempted to revisit the url today, I am redirected to the RC1 page. RC2 (build 5744) seems to have disappeared.
I read on another site that there might be some drama with the build, so MS have pulled it offline, until they can 'fix it' ;)

To 20 year MAC user
Why are you trashing Microsoft? I bet you never even tried the Beta's or RC-1. If you had bothered to, you would be amazed.
Does someone pay you to write that garbage and post it on all of the different sites.

MS only plays catch-up now
Aero looks nice but it's been done before. Search/find - been there done that. IE7 - more catching up (Firefox, Opera). More efficient file system - oops lost that one. And will it still have 3 wheels? I liken Windows to a 1960's Reliant 3-wheeler, its still a car but its not like a 'real' car with 4 wheels that doesn't fall over when driven hard. Both need regular maintenance to keep them running properly. Performance and security are on a par too! I earn my living from servicing the 'MS 3-wheelers' but I wouldn't dream of 'driving' it myself. The best things in life are free!
