Enrique Salem is the new president and chief executive at Symantec

Enrique Salem has officially taken over as president and chief executive at security and storage firm Symantec.

The move was announced in November, but the official transition was delayed until the end of the company's fiscal year on 4 April.

Symantec said that outgoing chief executive John Thompson will remain with the company as chairman.

"Through that process, Enrique emerged as the right person to lead the company and I am confident in his ability to continue to drive the success of our team," Thompson was quoted as saying in November.

Salem will be the company's first new chief executive in more than 10 years. He joined Symantec as a lead engineer when the company acquired Norton Computing in 1990, and later became the firm's first chief technology officer.

Salem left Symantec in 1999 to join Ask Jeeves, but returned in 2004 when Symantec purchased Brightmail, rising to the position of chief operating officer.
