A new Internet domain for the sex industry is planned after receiving the approval of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Proposals for a new top-level domain for adult sites by ICM Registry has been given the go-ahead after strong demand was shown. Negotiations are now under way on the technical details. The new domains will have the .xxx prefix.
"We are pleased with the ICANN Board's decision," said Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM Registry.
"By moving forward with .xxx, the online adult-entertainment industry is taking part in a pro-active approach to its presence on the Internet, making an identifiable commitment to responsible behaviour and to the development of best-business practices."
The prefix will not be compulsory, but will help those who want to filter out adult content from their web viewing. The new sites are expected to be considerably more expensive than standard top-level domains.
Parry Aftab, executive director of WiredKids.com and the Wired Safety Group, a worldwide leader in online safety, and parent and child Internet education, gave qualified approval.
"Creating the .xxx top-level domain gives parents a valuable tool to protect their children from inappropriate content on the Internet. It isn't a complete solution, but it is a very important step in the right direction," he said.
Do you agree?
kinda ignorant
how does this make sence?
the adult industry as a whole does its best to regulate itself, but be serious.
they want adult sites to do .xxx, thus being easally filtered out, and this will loose LOTS of traffic. ok may be doable, but then they are also going to be charged WAY more the regular webdomeina?
AND loose the countrygeneric option like .nl, .uk and so on? aka language specific websites?
