Data backup expert BakBone has released a real-time data protection system that it claims can recover Exchange, SQL Server and Windows file system data in "as fast as 30 seconds with near-zero data loss".
NetVault: Real-time Data Protector (RDP) gives firms the option to recover individual mailboxes or mailbox items in a granular fashion "without performing additional brick-level backups, which reduces storage costs and vastly minimises the loss of business-critical application data", the firm said.
Andy Brewerton, BakBone's technical director for EMEA, said that RDP gives firms "the Nirvana of granular recovery using a continuous data protection-like technology".
RDP uses agents that understand Exchange and SQL Server file systems, and takes all the I/O from these applications.
"How long you store the I/O depends on what type of policy you apply, but in effect it gives what we call virtual on-demand recovery," said Brewerton.
RDP lets customers click on the failed Exchange Server icon, dropping an empty 'shell' onto the system, making Exchange think that all its data is there, regardless of how big the Exchange file system is. In the background RDP adds the recovered Exchange data.
