FBI checks out Code Red suspects

A Canadian anarchist group is believed to be under investigation by the FBI in relation to the Code Red worm which recently terrorised the internet.

According to reports, the Deconstructionist Institute for Surreal Topology (DIST) has taken credit for the creation of the worm.

Although the FBI has not confirmed the investigation, it has warned of yet another variant of the Code Red worm which has already infected about 6000 machines, attacking the same vulnerabilities in Microsoft's IIS.

The FBI has again advised administrators to install the relevant patches on their servers to protect their networks.

The details of the investigation may be kept under wraps, but a written testimony presented to the US government this week by the General Accounting Office, an investigative branch of Congress, says that the worm is believed to have originated in Guangdong, China.

Although further details of the report have yet to be released, apparently alarm bells started ringing when the network administrator for Foshon University in Guangdong noticed a large amount of traffic on the network despite the fact that pupils had vacated the premises for the summer break.

So far the FBI has not made any arrests and will only say that the matter is "still under investigation".
