The 3G 64GB version of the Apple iPad is the most popular among UK shoppers as the tablet device continues to enjoy strong sales in the run-up to Christmas, according to the latest stats from market research firm Context.
The firm found that 80 per cent of UK iPad sales recorded in November were for the 3G version, due to mobile network operator stores being a major outlet for sales of the device.
In Europe the picture was slightly different, with 3G sales accounting for just 58 per cent of iPad unit sales.
According to Context, research earlier in the year indicated that more users favoured the Wi-Fi version of the iPad (around 70 per cent), however these stats were likely due to Apple shipping more Wi-Fi models than 3G devices at and near launch time.
UK shoppers have also been attracted by the higher memory version of the device, with 48 per cent opting for the 64GB version, unlike in Europe where just a quarter of users chose this tablet.
In general, iPad sales across the region were up by 6.5 per cent in November compared to the previous month as Apple continued to fend off competition from Samsung’s Galaxy Tab.
"Apple was the first to market with something that has a universal appeal,” said Context founder Jeremy Davies.
“In terms of next year, it'll be interesting to see which tablets go into battle with Apple's iPad during the early part of 2011, particularly with various launches coming up at CES and also Mobile World congress."
