Microsoft has issued beta test software for a Wi-Fi management utility called Windows Live Connection Center WiFi to a limited group of Office 2007 beta testers.
The service, scheduled for full release in early 2007, will provide facilities for connecting to secure and non-secure Wi-Fi hotspots using encryption, enabling users to establish a virtual private network from an unsecured hotspot.
Features include basic network management so that users can obtain information on wireless networks within range, such as network service provider and address, whether it is free or carries a usage charge, signal strength and services available via the hotspot.
Users will also be able to save hotspot 'favourites' so they can return and connect to them without lengthy set-up procedures.
Windows Live Connection Center WiFi will also enable users to establish a VPN from an unsecured hotspot, a feature which will be very popular with IT administrators who struggle with balancing ease of access with the need for security when managing mobile employees.
